Steps Communities in Action
![]() |
Mission of Steps to a Healthier Clark County Community Teams - To build and support environments that make it easier for the people of Clark County to be physically active and choose healthy food.
Creating and sustaining a healthy community requires an environment which supports healthy choices. People are more likely to walk if there are safe, well-lighted sidewalks or paths, and choose healthy foods if markets are in their neighborhood and if menus, vending machines and concessions include healthy options. Exposure to second-hand smoke can be reduced by policies which limit smoking in public places.
Vancouver/Clark Parks and Recreation Department, supported with Steps funding, has developed a collection of trails maps which identify safe walking routes throughout the county. People can choose from among more than 10 walks of varying difficulty. Watch for the Winner's Circle logo on healthy menu items in area restaurants, grocery stores, vending machines, school cafeterias, and student stores. To reduce public exposure to second-hand smoke, Clark County Commissioners and Vancouver City Council members adopted voluntary smoke-free policies for outdoor environments including parks and ball-fields. Signs created by student artists will urge park users to keep them "smoke-free".
