Steps Schools in Action
![]() |
Mission of Steps to a Healthier Clark County Schools Teams - To provide support to school districts in their implementation of nutrition and physical activity policies that will improve the health of youth.
This past year the Washington State Legislature passed Senate Bill 5436 which required every school district to adopt a nutrition and physical activity policy by August 2005. These new policies will enhance physical activity curricula, improve food nutritional content in vending machines, student stores and student dining and develop community/youth health advisory councils.
The Vancouver School District (VSD) physical activity policy states that all students in grades one through eight will receive during the school day an average of one hundred instructional minutes per week of physical education. Before this new policy was adopted VSD was only meeting 80 minutes of the required 100.
Through Steps funding the VSD was able to meet the requirement by purchasing "Take 10" curriculum. This curriculum will be implemented by elementary classroom teachers who will integrate short activity breaks during extended instructional periods.
For more information about other school districts implementations around their nutrition and physical activity policies please contact these District liaisons.
