Steps Initiatives - Access to Physical Activity

To build and support environments that make it easier for the people of Clark County to be physically active and to advocate for policies improvements to the built environment in these communities.

Title:

School Physical Activity Policies

Audience:

K-12 schools.

What:

In 2004 the Washington State Legislature passed Senate Bill 5436 which required every school district in the state to adopt a physical activity policy.

Result:

  • All Clark County school districts have adopted nutrition policies under SB5436;
  • The Camas and Vancouver School Districts have enhanced the statewide policy to be more proactive and specific in nutrition changes;
  • Vancouver and Evergreen School Districts partnered with WSU extension to offer nutrition education to their elementary and high school kids; and
  • Camas and La Center School Districts used Steps funding to support policy development by conducting School Health Index assessments.
