Description:
Worksites schools, health systems and community across our county want healthy vending. But first, they need to: define what a “healthy snack” is. On May 17th, 2006 communities representing all Steps venues came together to determine a process to implement and label healthy vending food and join forces to demonstrate the demand for a boarder selection of healthy items as well as convey the extent to which they are serious about this need to vendors.
At this round table community members;
- Learned from Seattle Schools and Kaiser Permanente about their experiences with healthy vending;
- Shared their vending challenges and successes;
- Explored criteria that can be used for healthy vending in our community;
- Looked at labeling plans and implementation strategies.
Next steps are to meet with local vending companies to educate them around the new criteria and guidelines and also to work with them to supply current food items that fit the criteria and to begin bringing in additional choices.
