Description:
Public Health Problem: describe the problem, such as rate of diabetes, asthma, etc. Program Example: describe how your program addressed this problem. Describe steps taken to achieve the activity.
The Executive Director of the Vancouver Farmer's Market contacted us about sharing an insert in The Columbian, which would promote shopping for fruits and vegetables at the market and while there, take a walk around the market and surrounding area. Steps to a Healthier Clark County agreed to develop the map and pay a portion of the cost to include the flyer in newspapers distributed to 52,000 subscribers in the community. The original plan was for a single page with the market information on one side and the map on the reverse. The market decided to do a four page to promote the opening of indoor market space and the grand opening family celebration of a new hotel adjacent to the market. The map is the back page of the flyer. The market and Steps each received an additional 2,000 copies to distribute.
In addition to promoting activity and healthy food choices the map promotes the Steps to a Healthier Clark County website.
Implications and Impact of activity described: describe the impact on data, policies, etc.
Goal: to make it the norm that people who shop the market will also engage in physical activity.
The map and market information were designed to prompt individuals to eat fresh fruits and vegetables and be active. We will follow-up by periodically staffing a booth at the market to distribute maps, encourage people to use the Steps to a Healthier Clark County website, etc.
Describe the activity as an accomplishment or success, a promising practice, or a “lesson learned,” or a demonstration of a “best practice”: Would you recommend this activity for other communities? Why?
TBD
Describe how this activity relates to sustainable policy change in your community, if applicable.
This activity is designed to encourage community norm change rather than policy. Promoting the market supports the increased consumption of fresh, locally gown produce. The map encourages associating healthy food choices with healthy lifestyle (physical activity).
